On the heels of General Motor’s announcement of cost cutting measures meant to raise nearly $15 billion dollars, Chrysler has revealed plans to develop its own line of electric vehicles.

Chrysler estimates its electric cars will be available in 3-5 years, placing even more pressure on the release and success of the Chevy Volt in 2010. While Chrysler’s electric car division, named ENVI, has 3 vehicles currently in development, it is keeping specific details about the cars under wraps.

In response to consumer demands for hybrid vehicles and Federal legislation requiring more fuel-efficiency, the company has announced a plan to for a Dodge Ram hybrid to be available in the 2010 model year. Rumors are also circulating in the industry that along with a hybrid Dodge Grand Caravan in 2009, Dodge Charger in 2011 and Jeep Grand Cherokee in 2012, Chrysler will continue to systematically roll out new hybrids through 2013 with the Dodge Avenger and Journey crossover vehicles.
